Why Fit Test?

Employees face unknown chemical and viral hazards, that's why they must use the highest rated respirators that fit properly. A single exposure to a certain virus, gas or particulate can change the life of a person forever.

Canadian Standards Association (CSA) regulations requires that if personal protective equipment (PPE) includes a respirator then it is imperative that they be fit tested.
A respirator is to be worn if you work in any of the following industries:

  • Health Care
  • Construction
  • Painting
  • Mining
  • Manufacturing

Respirator Fit Testing refers to a professional fit of respirators to make sure that the person is wearing the proper size and type of respirator for the shape of their face/head. A proper respirator fit guarantees that the harmful particulates in the air are filtered by the respirator and that no leaks occur around the seal of the respirator. It also ensures that the person is wearing the respirator correctly.

How often should fit testing be done?

Fit testing of respirators is required prior to initial use or whenever a different respirator is issued. Also, whenever there are changes in the user's physical condition that could affect the respirator fit (e.g., facial scarring, dental changes, cosmetic surgery, or an obvious change in body weight).

Canadian Standards Association states that fit testing should be done every two years but is recommended annually.
